Cooking with Mama is a webcast event in which I am cooking with my colleagues according to the instructions of my Mother who, living in Iraq, is giving them the instructions via a video messenger. Depending on the group, I am translating her language into German or English. The pattern is that she shows and tells me what to do, I translate, and then we follow her instructions and show the results of all phases of cooking for evaluation.I also introduce my friends to her and translate small conversations between her and my friends. Finally, we eat together.

When in summer 2006 I organized this event at the Art Academy in Mainz, Germany,I already haven’t seen my mom for four years. This cooking event was the first encounter with her after I left Iraq or rather with the feeling of seeing her after so many years apart.
For me, to involve someone, who is so related to me for so many years, into my work via internet, is a mixture of many things not that easy to embrace them by using words. That intimate communication which is unlike it used to be is taking place on an other piece of (virtual) land.
