Since its first edition the Mercosul Biennial has invited an artist of honour, for the quality, density and scope of his or her production. For the 5th edition the curators have chosen the Brazilian artist Amílcar de Castro (1920-2002). Amílcar is one of the greatest sculptors of the second half of last century. The coherence of his investigations throughout more than five decades has left a formidable legacy and is one of the greatest features of contemporary Brazilian cultural heritage. The special Amílcar de Castro exhibitions will be as follows: Retrospective of Sculpture from 1952 to 2002 in Warehouse A7 on the Port Quayside; monumental sculptures in the Largo Glênio Peres (in front of the Public Market); large-scale paintings (drawings), in the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul; Amílcar de Castro as Graphic Designer, documentary exhibition, in the Usina do Gasômetro; there will also be a "biographical" exhibition about the artist in Margs, showing videos, images, documents and distinctive small-scale works. Works by Amílcar can also be seen in the "The (re) invention of Space" historical exhibition about sculpture in Latin America from the 1950s to 1970s. Website: http://www.amilcardecastro.com.br
