Texto en Tzotzil: Li olole mu xtun xchoti ta k'echob, ta ton, yu'un ta xpas ta ch'aj, ja' li mu sna' xbak' li tone, li k'echobe je' cha'al jech chpas ta ch'aj yu'un li olole.

Tradução em Português: Dizem que não é bom deixar crianças sentadas em uma pedra ou em um tronco, pois se deixar, elas se tornarão muito preguiçosas, como o tronco ou a pedra, que não se movem.

Traducción al Español: Dicen que es malo sentar a los niños en un tronco o en una piedra; si así lo hacen, se volverán muy haraganes, como el tronco y la piedra, que no se mueven.

Traducción al Inglés: Don't sit a child on a log or a stone because if you do they'll become very lazy, just like the log and the stone, which don't move.

In this series of photographs and texts entitled Creencias de Nuestros Antepasados (Beliefs of our Ancestors, 1994), Maruch Santíz delivers a report that arises from her participation in the Photographic Project of Chiapas. This project, carried out in 1993, supplied the artist, aged 17, with cameras, films, and lab materials for documentary purposes. She combined photographs of everyday objects, nature, and people, with sayings and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of Chiapas, who had no written records. It is a state of emergency experience that she compiles in tzotzil, her mother language. These are not simple photographs of the indigenous, but photographs taken by an Indigenous woman. When she takes the camera, photography ceases to be an instrument of social control to become an instrument of affirmation of her cultural identity.
