CURATORIAL project

With the title "Message of a New America," the 10th Mercosur Biennial reclaims its historic calling by once again prioritizing art produced in Latin American countries. The exhibition, which will run from September to November 2015 in Porto Alegre, will have historian and art critic Gaudêncio Fidelis (Brazil) as chief curator. The curatorial team consists of deputy curator Márcio Tavares (Brazil) and assistant curators Ana Zavadil (Brazil), Fernando Davis (Argentina), Raphael Fonseca (Brazil), Ramón Castillo Inostroza (Chile), and Dialogante - Curator of the Educational Program Cristián G. Gallegos (Chile). The curatorial platform of the 10th Mercosur Biennial will focus on showcasing artistic production from Latin American countries, renewing an initial calling outlined in its first edition, whose curatorial strategy was to "rewrite" the history of Latin American art. This edition of the exhibition will seek to promote the visibility, readability, and reception of artistic production from these countries through a large-scale exhibition built around the region's most relevant production. The exhibition aims to address a considerable number of "blind spots" left by critics and historiography, bringing to light works whose artistic contributions have not yet received the critical consideration they deserve. Four major conceptual fields comprise the 10th Mercosur Biennial: The Journey of Adversity, The Insurgency of the Senses, The Disappearance of the Tropics, and The Journey Continues. Each will consist of one or more exhibitions, as well as activities focused on professional training in the curatorial field and the development of a related Educational Program. The 10th Biennial will be held considering the historical substratum of art and signaling a dimension of excellence and cultural and artistic significance in contemporary production. To this end, it will present a vast number of canonical and non-canonical works, covering a broad historical arc up to the present day. The exhibition will utilize a bold curatorial project based on conceptual frameworks whose contributions have been significant to the region, such as Oswald de Andrade's anthropophagy, neo-baroque as a strategy of miscegenation, the exploration of senses other than the gaze, and new approaches to artistic form stemming from the diverse "modernisms" of Latin American countries. The curatorial platform of the 10th Mercosur Biennial aims to contribute to the history of exhibitions on Latin American art, significantly intervening in the presentation of new curatorial models for promoting artistic production and its historical legibility.
