CURATORIAL project
The 6th Mercosul Biennial, held from September to November 2007, marks the beginning of a new phase in the history of the Mercosul Biennials. This edition adopted a curatorial model that intensified the exhibition's internationalization and implemented a meticulous educational program throughout its entirety. One of the main management challenges was expanding the event's contributions to the community beyond the art exhibitions. The curatorial project, led by Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, was conceived based on the educational proposals developed by pedagogical curator Luis Camnitzer, who believes that the spectator should be seen as a creative being and not merely a passive recipient of information. Therefore, an innovative reconfiguration of the Mercosul Biennial's educational program was established, which has been seen as a contribution to the discussion on art education in the country and should become a global reference for events of this format. The adoption of a metaphor based on Guimarães Rosa's famous short story, "The Third Bank of the River," permeated the work of all areas involved in the organization. The Third Bank symbolizes a shift in perspectives, the possibility of creating a third way of perceiving reality. Comprising six exhibitions, the event occupied three exhibition spaces: MARGS - Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Arts, Santander Cultural, and Armazéns do Cais do Porto. The curatorial project for the 6th Mercosul Biennial brought together 350 works by 67 artists from 23 countries, in the following exhibitions: - Monographic exhibitions of three major figures representing different moments in the history of Latin American art: Oyvind Fahlström, Francisco Matto, and Jorge Macchi. - Conversations: artists from Mercosul countries invite other artists based on artistic affinity. An exhibition that explores cultural geography through specific relationships between works of art. - Free Trade Zone: a series of projects selected by a team of international curators based solely on criteria of quality, relevance, and timeliness. - Three Borders: artists from different countries were brought to the tri-border region between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay to reflect on the complexity of international relations between the Mercosur countries. Based on this experience, they created a work specifically for the Biennial. - Pedagogical Program: The Pedagogical Project's activities began in April 2007, with the holding of the first Symposium on Art Education and the distribution of teaching materials to libraries and teachers in public and private schools in Rio Grande do Sul. Based on this material, a series of initiatives were implemented, involving teachers from both public and private schools. Additionally, the following activities were held: a mediator training course, public lectures with artists and curators before the exhibitions began, the International Symposium on Art Education, free transportation for students from public schools and underserved institutions, and the Diálogos project, which benefited the local artistic community. The 6th Biennial received more than 500,000 visitors during its 79 days of public access. During the event, more than 160,000 students from 172 cities were accommodated through scheduled guided tours. The Pedagogical Project held 55 teacher training sessions in 42 cities in Rio Grande do Sul and 4 cities in Santa Catarina in 2007. These sessions trained 7,570 teachers and educators from 348 municipalities. In December of the same year, the Mercosul Biennial Foundation held the exhibition "A Biennial for All - Stories and Contributions," showcasing the results achieved by the 6th Mercosul Biennial through videos, texts, photographs, and infographics. The exhibition took place at Santander Cultural and was visited by 9,724 people during its fifteen-day exhibition. The 6th Mercosul Biennial also produced a Social Responsibility Report, whose publication serves as a means of accountability to the community, promoting transparency in management actions, and sharing with the public information on the investments made and the contributions the project has made to the communities it serves. The report also presents a description of the Mercosul Biennial Foundation's activities and its commitment to the sustainability of the Mercosul Biennial project.
