The Villa-Lobos Orchestra is a music education program developed since 1992 at the Heitor Villa-Lobos Municipal Elementary School in Lomba do Pinheiro, on the outskirts of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. Under the baton of Cecília Rheingantz Silveira, also the program's creator and coordinator, the Orchestra has released two CDs (2002's "Trenzinho do Caipira" and 2008's "Olhos Coloridos"), a book (2012's "Orquestra Villa-Lobos - Música que Transforma"), and three DVDs (2013's "Orquestra Villa-Lobos ao Vivo," 2021's "Peace & Love," and 2023's "Afrika." Over its 32 years, the Orchestra has performed more than 1,400 concerts, attended by approximately 360,000 people. Furthermore, the program has received significant recognition from institutions linked to music, culture, education, and human rights, garnering over three dozen awards and establishing itself as one of the leading initiatives in this field in Brazil and Latin America. In 2024, the Villa-Lobos Orchestra became an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Porto Alegre.
