In our second session of the training seminar "Roleta: um giro de ideias" (Rolette: a spin of ideas), we invited Puma Camillê , pioneer of the "CAPOEIRA PARA TODES!" (Capoeira for Everyone!) project, to the conversation "Between Struggle and Party," moderated by Ursula Jahn, Educational Coordination Assistant at the 14th Mercosul Biennial. The conversation will address the relationship between capoeira and vogue, both bodily expressions marked by fighting and dance movements that celebrate the body and function as strategies of resistance. Both movements emerged from histories of marginalization: capoeira faced criminalization under the "Vagrancy Law," while vogue emerged in the Ballrooms, spaces of resistance and celebration of Black and Latinx LGBTQIAP+ culture. The talk will take place on December 7th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, at the Barbosa Lessa Auditorium in partnership with Espaço Força e Luz.
Puma Camillê is Ancestral Futuristic multidisciplinary artist and communicator who uses the fusion of capoeira and voguing to convey a striking political poetics that has led to an instructive encounter between LGBTQIA+ people, especially trans people, and to connect with Griots and Masters of popular cultures of resistance. Puma multiplies her knowledge in the community, in a great multi-artistic aQUEERlombamento with the project "CAPOEIRA PARA TODES!" (CAPOEIRA FOR ALL!). Mother of Ilê Legbara, she researches the aphrodisiac intersections in the Ballroom Community. Puma performed for Beyoncé at the launch event of the Renaissance Tour in Salvador, Bahia, and has represented Brazil at events in over 40 countries.
Roulette: spin of ideas
With each edition, the Mercosul Biennial's educational program expands potential dialogues between art, education, learning communities, and diverse fields of knowledge. At the 14th Biennial, Estalo kicks off a round of public conversations with the seminar "Roleta: giro de ideias."
The series of four meetings, held between November 2024 and March 2025, builds on the founding ideas of our pedagogical project, based on the triad "snap - wheel - turn," proposing reflections on collective action, the energy/effort that produces movement, struggles, dances, and other cultural manifestations in a circle. Guests Puma Camillê, Monica Hoff, Anne Magalhães, and guests Allan da Rosa and Froiid will drive this Roulette, sharing their vibrant artistic and pedagogical trajectories, always in dialogue with members of the educational team.
With each turn, we will be celebrating the living body, which speaks and learns in movement; the logic of play as an artistic and pedagogical strategy; the party as an act of resistance; and the invisible structures that sustain an educational project.
