Coleção da artista

The visual artist and academic researcher Renata Felinto has been performing her artistic research through painting, collage, photography and performance. It is, however, through the performance practice that the artist more directly confronts tensions raised by the presence of the feminine black subject in the Brazilian public space. In “Danço na terra em que piso (2014), Felinto dances graciously in seven public places of São Paulo, some of which are historical points of the city, such as Praça da Sé, which, together with Catedral da Sé, is a landmark of the State of São Paulo. For each space, Felinto chose a different song to use as sounding landscape of the performance. Each choice was taken considering the song lyrics, historical and political relevant issues, and even the artist’s own memories that are linked to the place. This way, Felinto created a narrative body, highlighting different traditions that inform the urban landscape, thus offering additional epistemologies to understand them. Her dance works as a gesture to reclaim territories, as an expansion for possibilities of her black presence.
