In the video work Estão sendo tecidos (2013/2018), the multidisciplinary artist Helô Sanvoy records his mother, Maria Conceição, when she is braiding his hair, while having a long conversation with him and his wife, Dheyne de Souza, about the events of her childhood: the working conditions in plantations, the interaction with descendants from enslaved people, the life difficulties at the Goiás countryside, the family traditions, the cares towards the body and, especially, towards the hair. This moment for taking care of the hair as a context for relevant talks on social and political themes, is a recurring event in the story of African descendent families in Brazil. The childhood stories from the artist’s mother get mixed up with the general life context of the families in the countryside of Goiás and the Central-West region in the late 1950, referring, therefore, to the formation of the cultural, historical and social tissue of the Brazilian countryside and, consequently, to the social and political unequal conditions experienced in the country nowadays.
