Cortesia de Lungiswa Gqunta and WHATIFTHEWORLD
South African sculptor and visual artist Lungiswa Gqunta’s multisensory works explore the social imbalances deriving from colonialism: colonial landscapes and the spatial legacies resulting from them, as is the case of the works presented at Bienal 12 | Porto Alegre, Gqunta, the video Feet Under Fire, (2017) and the installation The Softness of A Woman's Touch (2018-2020). What do we think about when we think about woman’s touch? To build the present version of the installation The Softness of A Woman's Touch, Gqunta engaged in intense collaborative work with four local black woman artists and art historians (Daniele Reis, Malena Mendes, Mariana de Jesus e Paula Fernandes) during the course of four weeks. Although, the knots formed and dismantled in this radical and lyrical weaving process remain unavailable to us, we are still invited to make additional considerations: What does this intervention in the space do with us? How ideas of touch, proximity, and intimacy on the one hand, colonial landscapes, spatial legacies and violence on the other are articulated? What are the ruptures that this collaborative black female poetic announces?
