Performance

Cortesia da artista

In 2011, Alejandra Dorado was invited to an artist's residence in La Perla, which was a former clandestine detention center. 2500 people, most of them still missing, have passed in this torture and extermination place in the provinces of Córdoba, Argentina. Aware of the stories of the women who were there reminded Dorado of Hugo Banzer Suárez's dictatorship in Bolivia (1971-1978). These are her childhood memories that intertwine with similar family histories. In this performance, Dorado draws a parallel between the tortured women in Argentina and Bolivia. She brings an experience from a Bolivian woman who was forced to sit on a block of ice for 24 hours, a clear form of torture with sexual overtones. The artist sits on an ice block for an hour, forcing herself to the same practice of torture. From this private experience, performance links, in a touching softness, the similarities among the Latin American dictatorships’ practices. The memories and recollections, summoned from symbolic interventions, are a way of warning us about the dangers of repeating the history.
