The work of the artist Gwladys Gambie, which is usually materialized through drawings, collages and performances, is centered around questions on the black woman and her representations both in Martinica, the island where the artist lives and works, and in the Caribbean in general. The Caribbean landscape and the creole language as part of the sounding landscape of the region are important articulations in this reflection, and they inform both the creation of the artist’s imaginary and the creation of a specific iconography to represent, in a decolonial form, the body of the black woman; which, in Gambie’s imaginary, is a sensitive cartography, a poetic space. For Bienal 12 | Porto Alegre, Gambie expanded the collage series The birth of Manman Chadwon (2018), a figure of her own personal mythology inspired in Manman Dlo, an ocean Goddess of the African-Caribbean culture. The meaning of the word Chadwon, in creole, also refers to sea urchin, a recurring reference in the artist’s work.
