It is an installation arisen from some questions: What do we mean by Homeland? Which values and feelings do we attribute to this concept? Overall, what do we do or justify in the name of the Homeland? The installation displays strings on which white flags are hung as if they were freshly washed sheets. At the bottom edge, there are loose words that report the responses given in a virtual poll about the ideas and emotions associated with the Peruvian homeland. This installation was thought from the Lava la Bandera (Washing the Flag) movement carried out by the Civil Society Collective in 2000. Natalia Iguiñiz and Sandro Venturo were members of this society who used to wash the Peruvian flag, every Friday, in 27 squares across the country and abroad. The demonstration was an attempt to draw attention against corruption and abuse of power. The flags and homeland words intercept the power structures of the government, likewise the heroic and masculine ideals of militarized societies. The artists intervene in the language and symbols of power, through domestic actions such as washing and hanging from the flag fabrics.
