In her practice, Christine Sun Kim investigates the role of sound in society, deconstructing its politics and analyzing spoken languages as a form of social currency. Elements such as musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), bodily expressions, and strategic humor frequently appear in her work. Working with drawing, performance, video, and large-scale murals, the artist explores her relationship with spoken and signed languages, built and social environments, and the world as a whole.
For the 14th Mercosul Biennial, Sun Kim presents a commissioned mural on the side wall of the Rua da Praia Shopping Center, visible from the Lutzenberger Garden at Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana. The mural features the phrase “Minha língua não é a língua do amor, mas sim a língua da sobrevivência” [My language is not the language of love, but the language of survival], created using the dry-brushing technique, a hallmark of the artist’s work.
