Urmeer

(Mexico, 1991)

Urmeer’s works offer alternative landscapes within the simultaneously hegemonic and kaleidoscopic realm of global pop culture. His creations explore mismatches and identities within communication, consumerism, and dystopia, recontextualizing icons taken from screens and storefronts that shape contemporary horizons.
Commissioned for the 14th Mercosul Biennial, Urmeer presents two projects in different locations across Porto Alegre. In the Campo de Ondas project, named after the iconic song by the band Nirvana, murals envisioned by the artist in collaboration with the local community adorn the sides of the Estação Cidadania Lomba do Pinheiro building. Additionally, at Farol Santander in the city center, the artist exhibits fifteen new paintings that compose the work Anima Mundi a través del ojo humano. These canvases portray various “Earths” with cartoon-like features, concealing catastrophic narratives beneath colorful and visually appealing details and accessories.
