Mauro Fuke

(Brazil, 1961)

Since his youth, Mauro Fuke’s work has been defined by his interest in sculpture, the creation of objects, and the use of wood. His exploration of the artisanal nature of artistic production began in the 1980s within his own family, descendants of Japanese immigrants who arrived in Brazil in the first half of the 20th century.
For the 14th Mercosul Biennial, Fuke has created three medium-scale works that further his research into self-supporting wooden structures. Taking inspiration from the curatorial concept of the “estalo” [snap], the sculptures move slowly in response to the audience’s movement through the exhibition space. Composed of organic shapes and made from different types of wood, which create a chromatic contrast, the works are in constant motion, inviting the audience to move around them and take their time.
