Fatima Rodrigo

(Peru, 1987)

Fátima Rodrigo critically examines the principles and “legacies” of modernism in Latin America, as well as gender identity issues within this context, focusing on the problematization of power structures that shape the world and define what is considered “modern” and its systems of hierarchy. Her multimedia practice includes interactive installations at the intersection of architecture, modern art, and pop culture.
At the 14th Mercosul Biennial, Fátima Rodrigo presents two commissioned installations designed as dance floors, located at Pop Center and Espaço Força e Luz, both in downtown Porto Alegre. Inspired by music and dance as central elements of celebrations and social interactions—along with the stage design of popular Latin American TV shows—Rodrigo invites passersby and visitors to integrate themselves into her settings, transforming them into living diagrams continuously reshaped by moving bodies. By placing her works in public spaces, the artist also expands the traditional boundaries of what are considered “art spaces”.
